Children's CPD Module - Communicating and Engaging with Children and Young People

This module can only be taken by those who have previously undertaken the 15 credit CPD module ‘Understanding Children’ as it builds on the specialist knowledge of observing and understanding children and the enhanced understanding of ‘use of self’ developed in that module.

This 15 credit Masters level module is for social workers and other professionals wanting to deepen their knowledge, skills and qualities for practice with children and young people in complex, sensitive and contested contexts.

Learning outcomes
Themes covered include:

  • Learning from observing and analysing real life practice

  • Communicating with children and young people in challenging and sensitive contexts

  • Using play and creative techniques in working with younger children

  • Working with traumatised young people, those at risk of exploitation and  those with harmful sexual behaviours

  • Developing use of self

This module will enable social workers to develop the following aspects of the Knowledge and Skills Statement from the Chief Social Worker for Children and Families:

1. Relationships and effective direct work
2. Communication
5. Abuse and Neglect of Children
Additional information

You will learn alongside students on the 30 credit ‘Observing, Communicating and Engaging with Children and Young People’ module. Lectures, seminars and directed reading will boost your capacity to read children’s non-verbal communications and respond creatively and flexibly in situations of risk according to the child’s needs, strengths and preferences. Workshop-based sessions will provide the opportunity to critically consider and practise the methods and skills needed for engagement and communication with children

A learner contract applies to this module. The contract states that you may be asked to repay course fees if you do not complete the module or if you cease employment with the Council within one year of completing the module. You must sign the contract in order to be allocated a place on the module.
