Overview

This course is suitable for staff and carers working with people with learning disabilities who want to develop skills in using makaton. This is the professional route.
 
Schools staff should contact the Brighton and Hove Inclusion Support Service – Language Team, The Music & Arts Building, County Oak Avenue, in the first instance on 01273 293672.
 
Makaton is a language programme involving speech, manual signs and graphic symbols developed to help people with communication difficulties, especially people with learning disabilities.

By the end of this 2 day workshop participants will have improved and developed their skills using makaton signs and symbols from stages 1-4 and additional stage.

By the end of this course you will be able to:



  • explain the use and purpose of the makaton vocabulary

  • explore the use of augmentative methods of communication

  • introduce and practice signs and symbols from key stages 1-4

  • introduce underpinning theory and research

Attendees will be provided with participant manuals featuring all the signs and symbols covered on the course.
