You must have previously completed ‘Practice Education Stage 1 (or its equivalent).

This 30 credit module is for qualifed social workers, experienced practice educators and assessors who are involved in the teaching, supervising and assessing of trainee social workers.and primarily those who wish to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to enable them to take full responsibility for the teaching and assessing of a student social worker up to and including the student's final social work placement.

In order to apply for this module you must have discussed and agreed with your manager to take responsibility for a Social Work Student on placement.


Practice Education Stage 2 will assume prior knowledge of, and build expertise in, the critical analysis and application of, the following issues:



  • building solid foundations for the learning relationship - induction, using networks, learning contracts

  • models of supervision, including reflective supervision

  • analysing and applying theories of learning

  • using research to enhance practice teaching and direct practice

  • organising, pacing and managing learning experiences of others

  • promoting anti-oppressive practice in practice education

  • developing and operating equitable and robust systems of assessment

  • teaching and facilitating critical reflection and reflexivity

  • teaching and facilitating the effective use of knowledge in social work practice

  • working with students in challenging situations


As part of this module you will be observed undertaking different tasks of the practice educator role on at least two separate occasions, including the presentation of video-recorded material to the module student group.


This module can be taken as part of a PGCert, PGDip or as a stand alone module.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this module you will be able to:



  • Demonstrate through your portfolio that you are able to make effective links with others to organise a planned and well-paced work-load of learning opportunities for your student to demonstrate your practice capability (Domain A of Professional Standards for Practice Education, College of Social Work/Skills for Care 2012)

  • Demonstrate your ability to use adult learning theory and your knowledge of social work theory and practice to enable students' learning and professional development in practice (Domain B of Professional Standards for Practice Education, College of Social Work/Skills for Care)

  • Critically reflect on the assessment task and to demonstrate your management of fair and well planned assessment against the Professional Capabilites Framework of learners in practice (Domain C of Professional Standards for Practice Education, College of Social Work/Skills for Care)

  • Demonstrate, through critical reflection, effective continuing performance as a practice educator and an ability to transfer practice educator skills, knowledge and values to new roles in mentoring, supervision, teaching and/or assessment.(Domain D of Professional Standards for Practice Education, College of Social Work/Skills for Care)

  • Demonstrate the ability to search for, critically analyse  and apply research to the practice educator role, and to demonstrate methods of developing research mindedness in their learners.

Course pre-requisites

Candidates must be  registered social workers with a minimum of three years' post-qualifying experience. They must be involved in the teaching and assessing of a student social worker or other staff engaged in social care and/or social work whilst undertaking the course.


Candidates must have previously obtained Practice Education Stage 1 or equivalent (such as Enabling Work Based Learning and Assessment) and had responsibility for supervising at least one student social worker previously.
