Autism Awareness - The Impact on Families

This half day course is appropriate for all Children’s Services staff, CVS staff, volunteers, support staff and foster carers and offers an introduction to understanding autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and gives attendees a chance to reflect on the common challenges faced by families caring for a child or young person with ASD.

With input from local families, we discuss how the needs and challenges of families change as their child moves through different life stages and how the support needed by families can also change over time.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to

  • recognise and understand the common features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD)

  • explore the key issues faced by this group of children across a variety of contexts

  • share common issues families may come across when caring for a child with autism

  • highlight agencies and groups on offer locally who can support the needs of families
