Code: BH/17/123 Domestic Abuse & Substance Misuse

We suggest you complete the two day Drug & Alcohol Basic Awareness course before attending any of the more specialised full day courses. This is to equip you with more general knowledge and skills in preparation for learning about the more in depth topics. Don’t hesitate to contact the Health Promotion Team on 01273 731900 if you would like to discuss this further.

This course will enable participants to understand concepts and develop skills to work effectively with service-users who present with domestic abuse and substance misuse issues. Participants will explore the behaviours which constitute domestic abuse, and the ways in which substances are used in the context of domestic abuse. Domestic abuse risk management and safety planning will be considered within the context of working with service-users affected by both issues. Participants will learn to recognise the need to work at community level with effective screening and signposting on to relevant services.

What the research says.

Research on performance management shows:

Frontline managers effective at people management can improve their teams' performance by 25%, retention by 40% and commitment to the organisation by 29%.  releasing even part of this potential will support the organisation’s performance

We also learn that 37% of managers are considered effective at evaluating performance through formal reviews, but that all managers can increase their effectiveness by focusing on two key areas: performance review preparation and performance review delivery.

This is a half day workshop focussing on performance conversations.  The course consists of a virtual workshop from CEB (Corporate Executive Board) including constructive feedback discussions; delivering formal reviews; managing negative reactions to feedback; a performance discussion guide and a performance review checklist.  As part of this learning pathway you will be able to access further training and resources including existing corporate courses,  the new CEB (Corporate Executive Board) material, elearning and tools and tips for people and performance management.

We value your feedback in shaping this half day.  Please give feedback at the end of the session and this will be used to improve the training provided.

This workshop outlines what is expected of our managers when carrying out performance plans with their staff and taking into account the new PDP process and the new Behaviours framework.  The CEB also has further training materials including workbooks & presentations on the following topics – relevant CEB materials listed below:)

·         Delivering formal reviews - presentation

·         The art of delivering formal feedback

·         Dealing with negative reactions to performance feedback

·         Sourcing 360 degree feedback.

The session will define good practice and help individuals to identify gaps where further training might be needed and frameworks to improve performance management and team and individual performance.

Code: BH/17/971 Understanding and Working with Trauma (2 days)

This 2 day course for fostering social workers and foster carers will enable you to share practical tools for creating a safe and inclusive space for learning, living and playing together, explain behaviours from a nervous system perspective and help you develop a series of activities that can be used to bring people closer together. It is particularly useful for those who have been through life challenges, are not able to access mainstream education and are affected by trauma.

The training uses a 6 part framework, built around a central philosophy, which acts both as a guide for social workers and foster carers for understanding the people in your care and a planning tool for managing challenging behaviours.

Code: BH/17/938 Unique Private Law and Domestic Abuse workshop

Private Law proceedings are a common feature of a social work case load, although common, they are also some of the most challenging work social workers undertake.

We try to keep focussed on the child however this can be difficult in the context of complex family dynamics particularly when domestic abuse is a concern.

There is a growing acknowledgement that training has been limited or non existent in this area and this will be the first of a series of workshops aimed to address this.
