Code: BH/18/1240 Adults CPD Module - Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards: Skills and Assessment

This 20 credit module enables practitioners to acquire the knowledge, skills and competence to be appointed as Best Interest Assessors, under the Mental Capacity Act 2005, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards. You will learn to apply the relevant law and codes of practice to best interest assessments as well as how to complete the necessary documentation and follow statutory procedures. The module also explores issues of disadvantage and oppression in the context of Deprivation of Liberty.

Learning is supported by formal lectures and other presentations; simulated case material; and small group discussions. Input is from practitioners, lawyers, service users and carers and other professionals, such as IMCAs. There is focus also upon the development of skills in the use and application of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, related Codes of Practice and Regulations to assessments for Deprivation of Liberty. Students are supported by module teaching staff who are available in person during the intensive teaching phase and via email and prearranged tutorials after it, during the preparation for the Open Book examination.

The assessment for this module is a 3500 word Take Home Examination Paper (i.e. the Examination Paper is accessed electronically and a number of days are given to complete the questions, based on a case study), which explores critically the application of relevant knowledge, theory and research to Best Interest Assessments.The assessment will be both a Take Home Examination paper and completion of appropriate relevant statutory paperwork. Students must pass both parts of the assessment to pass the module.

This module can be taken as part of a PGCert, PGDip or as a stand alone module. This module + Enabling Learning + ASYE module make up the PGCert. There is further information about modules and awards in the attached document.

Understanding life history, identity and narrative is a fundamental right for children who are not growing up with their birth parents. Life story work is the process of helping a child or young person to understand their history and a way of helping them to develop a more integrated sense of themselves and their identity.

This workshop will provide an opportunity to explore the different forms that life story work can take; roles and responsibilities of the network around the child; develop an action plan to embed life story work more fully.

Code: BH/19/0010 Making Analysis Central to the Core Assessment Process (for ASYEs)

This two-day course is aimed to give participants the knowledge and skills required to use the assessment framework alongside other tools which can assist the analysis of information and assessment of any potential risk to the child.

 Priority booking is being given to Newly Qualified Social Workers as this course is mandatory for their Assessed and Supported Year in Employment.

Brighton & Hove is committed to meeting the needs of those harmed by crime and conflict, by ensuring safe, secure and effective restorative practices are embedded throughout the city. This is the pledge made by the city's Community Safety Partnership in 2015.

This training covers the full range of skills outlined in the core 2013 National Occupational Standards for Restorative Practice.

This course was accredited by the Restorative Justice Council in March 2018 to enable learners to facilitate restorative conferences/meetings at the standard required by the Criminal Justice System.

This course is aimed at staff involved in the manual handling of adults, including the use of hoists and other support equipment, who have completed the Safer People Handling Basic Awareness training course or a Safer People Handling refresher course within the last 12 months. Important Eligibility Applies - if you last completed training outside of the last 12 month period (30 days beyond this, absolute maximum is acceptable) or you have not completed training in this area before please do not book onto this refresher event, you must complete the bascic awareness event.

It is a National/local directive that staff refresh and update their knowledge and skills regularly. This half-day course will update staff on the possible injuries to themselves and enable them to carry out transfer operations safely.
