Code: BH/17/867 Children's CPD Module - Communicating and Engaging with Children and Young People

To log your interest for this module please ensure you click on “request a place" by 30th June 2017.

This 15 credit module can only be taken by students who have previously undertaken the 15 credit CPD module, ‘Understanding Children’, as it builds on the specialist knowledge of observing and understanding children, and the enhanced understanding of ‘use of self’, which was developed in that module.  Students on this module will be taught alongside students on the 30 credit module, ‘Observing, Communicating and Engaging with Children and Young People’.

Students will draw on their enhanced understanding of self and others in order to inform the development of their direct practice with children and young people.  Lectures, seminars and directed reading will boost students’ capacity to read children’s non-verbal communications and to respond creatively and flexibly according to the child’s needs, strengths and preferences.   Workshop-based sessions will provide students with the opportunity to critically consider and practise the methods and skills needed for engagement and communication with children within the professional role. Workshops will include:
- Understanding and engaging with children with additional communication needs
- Using solution-focused approaches with young people
- Using play and creative techniques in working with children
- Working with traumatised children, those at risk of CSE and those with harmful sexual behaviours.
- Providing written materials to children in child-centred formats.

This module can be taken as part of a PGCert, PGDip or as a stand alone module. See application information document in 'attached documents' for further details of the modules, pathways and awards.
