Code: BH/18/1240 Adults CPD Module - Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards: Skills and Assessment

This 20 credit module enables practitioners to acquire the knowledge, skills and competence to be appointed as Best Interest Assessors, under the Mental Capacity Act 2005, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards. You will learn to apply the relevant law and codes of practice to best interest assessments as well as how to complete the necessary documentation and follow statutory procedures. The module also explores issues of disadvantage and oppression in the context of Deprivation of Liberty.

Learning is supported by formal lectures and other presentations; simulated case material; and small group discussions. Input is from practitioners, lawyers, service users and carers and other professionals, such as IMCAs. There is focus also upon the development of skills in the use and application of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, related Codes of Practice and Regulations to assessments for Deprivation of Liberty. Students are supported by module teaching staff who are available in person during the intensive teaching phase and via email and prearranged tutorials after it, during the preparation for the Open Book examination.

The assessment for this module is a 3500 word Take Home Examination Paper (i.e. the Examination Paper is accessed electronically and a number of days are given to complete the questions, based on a case study), which explores critically the application of relevant knowledge, theory and research to Best Interest Assessments.The assessment will be both a Take Home Examination paper and completion of appropriate relevant statutory paperwork. Students must pass both parts of the assessment to pass the module.

This module can be taken as part of a PGCert, PGDip or as a stand alone module. This module + Enabling Learning + ASYE module make up the PGCert. There is further information about modules and awards in the attached document.

People in receipt of social care have the same rights to live and also die with dignity as anyone else.  This course is for care workers supporting people helping them to live well nearing the end of life with any end stage illness in any setting.  It will consider how to provide personalised, culturally appropriate support and the practical skills to offer this.

This course will also look at the NHS South East Coast Do Not Attempt CPR (DNACPR) principles, multi agency forms and local adult social care guidance.

This course will help you to identify any manual handling issues within your area of work. You will be shown the correct way to move, lift and carry loads in order to reduce your risk of injury.  
 
The course will show you how to carry out a risk assessment for load handling activities and teach you about the anatomy of the body and the mechanics of the back and spine, with a practical session to suit the delegates.

Code: BH/18/0332 Sexual Abuse - Working with Perpetrators & Non-offending Partners

This two day course will cover the following:

Day 1 - Sexual abusers, engaging, denial and risk assessment. We will look at denial and how to engage offenders, interviewing styles and interview practice, what we mean by risk, plus introduction to risk assessment protocols, including one usable when there is no conviction, only allegations.

Day 2 - Understanding and working with non-offending partners of child sexual abusers. This will cover non offending parents, the reasons they respond as they do, analysing our own responses to them and practicing ways to engage them during assessment (of ability to act protectively) or afterward. Also input about how to structure assessment reports and how to incorporate insights gained from interviews.
