Code: BH/21/0375 Anti racism and white privilege for BHISS team only (EVENT FULL)

This session is for Brighton and Hove Inclusion Support Services (BHISS) team members only - if you are not part of that service, please don't book on.

Brighton & Hove City Council has made a commitment to becoming an anti-racist council.

As a predominantly white council we must recognise what we don’t know, what we don’t experience and see. We need to openly discuss the language we use and understand what different words mean to different people.

To support this, we want to educate staff on white privilege, language and structural racism, As a starting point, we are offering this training for staff.

This anti-racism session has been designed to:

  • support staff to strengthen their understanding of race equality and develop the knowledge and skills to identify and address racism in their workplace
  • Introduce participants to the main concepts of race equality, such as privilege and structural racism within a safe, open and reflective space
Please note that this is not the mandatory Fair and Inclusive briefing that all staff must attend.

The course will be delivered by Brenda Lewis, from training company Ceruleanblu.

Code: BH/21/0177 Systemic Approaches to Working with Families (EVENT FULL)

This 4 session course will helps those working with children and families to work in a more holistic manner and understand that family members are inextricably linked and the actions of one always have an impact on the actions of others. Systemic thinking holds at its heart the importance of understanding people, their thoughts, feelings and behaviours within the context of the relationships and the environment they are part of.

You will be encouraged to build on the skills they have already, enabling them to hold the whole family in mind when working with a child or young person.

Brighton and Hove have had a Functional Family Therapy Team (FFT) for the past 12 years. FFT is an evidence based intervention that works with high risk adolescents and their families. The team work with young people who are at risk of becoming LAC or going into custody. Part of the training will explore how the model works and how social workers can work in partnership with the FFT therapists, by using some of the FFT concepts and techniques in their work.

Please note, priority places to social workers.
