Code: BH/17/262 Basic British Sign Language (Basic BSL)

The course aims to give you a basic knowledge of British Sign Language (BSL), together with practice in signing, so that you are able to communicate with members of the deaf community in simple everyday situations.

This basic course covers the signs and skills needed to achieve basic communication in the following areas:

  • meeting people
  • the weather; time, age and money
  • families, work and interests
  • transport, direction and buildings...and more

In addition, students learn about basic deaf awareness and deaf culture.

Code: BH/17/857 Adults CPD Module - Social Work Practice Education, Assessment and Supervision (Practice Education Stage 2)

Learning on the module supports social work practitioners in developing the knowledge, skills and values to plan enable and assess the learning of a social work student. Learning on the module covers the requirements of Stage 2 of the College of Social Work’s Practice Educator Professional Standards (PEPS).

The module is delivered over 5 days using a range of methods including presentations, structured discussions and exercises designed to draw on participants practice and personal experience.

Small groups of students will be encouraged to share their perspectives, critique the concepts which are presented to them and apply learning to their own specialist social work context.

Whilst on the module you must have a Stage 2 qualified practice educator allocated to support you and assess your practice (via Direct Observations) in meeting your responsibilities towards your allocated student. Learning on the module reviews Stage 1 learning and introduces the additional requirements for Stage 2 of the Practice Educator Professional Standards (PEPS)

There are two elements to the assessment of this module. These are:
Part 1: a portfolio of Practice Evidence
Part 2: A 3000 word Reflective analysis of Practice and development as a Practice Educator

This module can be taken as part of a PGCert, PGDip or as a stand alone module. Students who complete this module + the Enabling Learning (Stage 1) module will be able to gain the PGCert in Practice Education. See attached document for further information.

Code: BH/18/0125 Emergency First Aid - (Important - For Shared Lives Carers Only)

This course, enables first aiders to give emergency first aid to someone who is injured or becomes ill. It includes both theory and practical sessions and is designed to boost confidence. There is no final exam however delegates are assessed throughout the course and certificates, valid for three years, are issued to those who have reached the required standard.

Each delegate will be provided with a first aid manual.

Code: BH/18/056 RSPH Level 2 Understanding Health Improvement (1.5 days)

This Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) Level 2 Award is accredited with the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). This course provides learners with knowledge and understanding of the benefits of positive health and wellbeing and how to support and direct individuals towards further practical support in adopting and maintaining a healthier life. The course will provide a national and local context of health and a useful overview of tools and resources including local initiatives and services, which promote health improvement.

PLEASE READ: The accreditation is optional. In order to gain the Award candidates are required to complete a 45-minute multiple-choice exam which will be assessed. Successful candidates will receive an RSPH certificate. This costs £20, which will automatically be added to your basket on booking. If you do not wish to take the exam, please specifiy this under 'special intructions' when requesting a place.

This course looks at the main principles of adult safeguarding in line with the Care Act and the Making Safeguarding Personal approach. It explores practice issues regarding abuse or neglect to service users, including the responsibilities of staff in preventing and reporting. The course focuses on the role of frontline staff who support adults.
