Code: BH/18/0170 Homeless Reduction Act 2017

The Government describes the Homeless Reduction Act 2017 as the most ambitious legislative reform in decades. The Act aims to reduce homelessness and places significant extra duties on local authorities. The Government has yet to publish statutory guidance so there is much work to be done to assess its impact and this course will be an important step in that process.

This course will give you an understanding of the new duties on local authorities and changes to existing housing law.

Code: BH/17/190 LSCB - Safeguarding Children 1: Developing a Core Understanding (EVENT FULL)

This is the first of three core courses to provide staff from all agencies, (within the statutory and voluntary sectors), with an introduction to how agencies work to keep children and young people within the city of Brighton & Hove safe.(there is an expectation that these three core days will be completed in sequential order, and failure to do so, may result in an application being rejected).

This safeguarding training is implicit in keeping children and young people safe from all aspects of abuse, be they sexual, physical, neglect or emotional.

It will develop your understanding of how the inter-agency working arrangements are put in place and how early help interventions can be utilised within safeguarding procedures. It will also raise your awareness of the issues with regard to all elements of abusive behaviour toward children and young people.

It is recommended that anyone new to safeguarding undertakes this training in conjunction with the other two days of “working together”, and that all three days are completed, before moving on to attending any of the more specialised training provided by the LSCB.

Code: BH/18/0127 Mindfulness Programme for Health and Adult Social Care BY INVITE ONLY

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is an approach developed in the 90’s by three cognitive therapy specialists in an internationally linked programme of research into the prevention of depression.  It is recommended by the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence as a means to prevent depressive relapse but is being used increasingly widely with people who experience anxiety and stress.

MBCT aims to help people build their own strategies for staying well based upon skills and practices that are best taught in a group rather than a one to one context.

The core of the MBCT approach is practice and experiential learning, developed over an eight week programme of weekly 2 hour sessions. Participants are also expected to commit to 30 – 40 minutes of daily mindfulness practice.

Note: This is not group therapy and does not require you to share personal information or talk about past experiences, although you will reflect on how your mindfulness practice is developing. People engaged in counselling and/or mental health services are encouraged to seek advice from their relevant health professional prior to enrolling.

If you work in Sussex Partnership Trust / Section 75 services please do not apply for this programme. There are a wide range of opportunities open to you from the Sussex Mindfulness Centre.

Code: SGC/17/063 Solution Focused Approach to Working with Children and Families

Solution Focused Practice is a short-term, goal-oriented approach which helps clients change by constructing solutions rather than dwelling on problems.  Elements of the solution are often already present in the client’s life and become the basis for ongoing change.  The course covers ways in which this can be achieved and includes opportunities to practise the approach, apply it in the workplace and share the experiences with others.

This 2 day course explores how a Solution Focused Brief Therapy approach can be used in a variety of contexts including health, social care and educational settings where change is required.
