Code: BH/18/1220 ASYE Children's CPD Module - Compassionate Practice: Addressing the Relationship Challenges in the Social Work Role

Compassionate Practice: Addressing the Relationship Challenges of the Social Work Role is the new 30 credit CPD module that will support the Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) and is referred to, in this application pack as the ‘ASYE Module’. The module is taught by the University of Sussex.

This six week module, run in the Summer Term, is delivered via a series of seminars and lectures given by professionals, practitioners and service users in children's services to help develop the skills and knowledge of newly qualified workers.

Taught sessions run from 1-4pm. Students spend morning in the University Library, or working on research-based studies to complement their learning.

The sessions integrate current theory with practice, and will help you to consider the challenges and dilemmas of contemporary practice whilst you get to grips with your daily responsibilities.

You will explore your learning in relation to your practice experience and relevant Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF) domains, and the course will enable you to meet requirements of Knowledge and Skills statements. During your period of study, you will benefit from access to the University’s library, various social work materials, and from peer support.

Code: BH/19/0449 Blood Borne Viruses & Safer Injecting

Brighton and Hove has a significant drug using population, for whom related health-harms, including blood-borne viruses and overdose, are an issue. The aims of this course are to give an overview of HIV, Hepatitis B and C transmission, prevention and epidemiology, and to explore how and why vulnerable groups are particularly affected. This course focuses on raising awareness of these issues amongst professionals, in order that they and their service users are fully informed. City-wide screening provision, inoculations and treatment services are promoted, and safer injecting practices highlighted.

Code: BH/19/0262 First Aid at Work 2 Day Recertification (very important: please see eligibility information within course details before requesting a place)

This 2 day recertification course is specifically for qualified First Aiders who currently hold a current ‘in date’ 3 year First Aid at Work Certificate nearing expiry who need to renew their qualification for a further 3 years and refresh their knowledge and skills.

This is not the 12 month annual refresher event, please ensure you are accessing the correct event.

Eligibility – You can only attend this course if

You are a qualified First Aider and have previously attended the 3 day First Aid at Work Course and
Your current certificate will still be in date at the time of the course BUT is due to expire in following 6 months or has not expired by more than 30 days.

You can’t attend this course if -

If you currently hold an Emergency First Aid at Work certificate, you cannot top this up to a full First Aid at Work certificate by undertaking this course.

It is strongly recommended that you book your space on this course between 3 and 6 months prior to your First Aid at Work Certificate expiring.

NB: Suitable clothing taking some physical activity into account should be worn.

Code: BH/18/1733 Medicines Management for Senior Staff (AM)

This 4-hour interactive course is for senior council adult social care staff and private and independent care homes/domiciliary senior staff.  The course will look at supporting senior staff to develop and implement a medicines policy and associated audits, as well a general update on any new local/national legislation and guidance.  In addition it will focus on examples of good practice guidance for assessing staff’s medicines administrations competencies.  The course is delivered by a senior pharmacist from the local Clinical Commissioning Group and has been developed locally based on local training needs and links into the Brighton and Hove City Council and Clinical Commissioning Group medicines management policies.

Code: BH/19/0382 Safer People Handling Risk Assessor Refresher (EVENT FULL)

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 require employers to make suitable and sufficient assessments of all manual handling operations and to take appropriate steps to reduce the risk of injury to the lowest level reasonably practicable. This course will provide assessors with an annual update on the information and skills to undertake assessments of manual handling needs. This course is aimed at staff who have completed the Safer People Handling Risk Assessor refresher course or the full course ('safer people handling risk assessor') within the last 12 months.

Participants will receive an attendance certificate to show that they have received training under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992.

Code: BH/19/0652 Working with Difficult to Engage Fathers: Gaining Insight and Practical Strategies

This one and a half day course will give attendees the opportunity to develop practical skills and strategies to build positive working relationships with fathers.  They will hear about the wide ranging implications of meaningful engagement through the latest research and theories, and Q&A sessions with professionals with specialist knowledge/experience. 

Practitioners will consider how a two-way engagement barrier between professionals and fathers can form and will learn how to overcome the challenges this presents.  They will also explore why fathers can be hard to engage and the underlying reasons for their use of anger, aggression and non-engagement.  

The additional half-day will ensure attendees have time to embed the learning into their practice by trying out techniques and strategies, then returning as a group to reflect on their success, as well as discuss challenges.
