Code: BH/22/0687 BHSCP - Safeguarding Briefing - Operation Solah

This short hour long briefing is to explain the joint Iniative between Sussex Police and colleagues at Wise/Barnados.

SOLAH stands for "safer online at home " and was started in November 2021 as a specific pathway for POLIT to refer children and young people who were either uploading self generated images to the Internet or sharing indecent images of children between themselves or on online.

Once an appropriate case is identified we refer to WiSE or Barnardos to make contact with the family and offer safeguarding advice and online education sessions to both parents/carers and the child/young person. This can take place once or over a number of sessions. These organisations are much better placed than POLIT to deliver this kind of support.

Not every case will get referred. Where we believe there is evidence of online grooming, previous history of sexual offending, significant or ongoing Children's Services engagement already or concerns about wider risks to case workers from the family (DV, drugs, violence , sexual offending etc) then the matter will remain with Police, possibly with CS involvement , to resolve.

Code: BH/22/0186 BHSCP-Suicide Awareness (Working with Young People) - (16yrs & over)

These training sessions are aimed at professionals in contact/working with families in East and West Sussex and Brighton and Hove who haven’t attended a Suicide awareness course in the last three years.

They are being run as a colaboration between all three Safeguarding Children Partnerships across Sussex and delivered by colleagues from Grassroots.

Course options:

Working with young people 16+ and adults : identifying, engaging and referring/sign posting individuals with suicidal thoughts and behaviours

The majority of those who die by suicide are not in contact with mental health services – they are right here in our community. Many children and young people, and their parents or carers, are either having thoughts of suicide, and an increasing number are attempting or even completing suicide.

These basic awareness courses will equip professionals working with families to pick up on vulnerabilities, identify who might be at risk and start an open conversation about suicide, as this is one of the best way we know to prevent suicide.

We know this suicide is something that many professionals find it hard to talk about, especially with young people and their parents or carers.

Code: BH/22/0374 BHSCP - Preventing the Exploitation of Children and Young People (Day1)

Ensuring that children and young people in Brighton & Hove are protected effectively from sexual harm and violent exploitation is a priority for Brighton & Hove LSCB.

Day One of our two training courses on exploitation looks at different ways that children & young people may be exploited by those who have power over them by virtue of their age, gender, intellect, physical strength and/or economic or other resources. Violence, coercion and intimidation commonly occur in exploitation, and these situations are often characterised by the child or young person’s limited availability of choice resulting from their social/economic and/or emotional vulnerability

This course is facilitated by The Wise Project, and there will be a strong focus on Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE), how to identify this abuse, and disrupt the exploitation. You will also look at the emerging threat of Child Criminal Exploitation (CCE) and County Lines activity, as well as considering what may make a young person vulnerable to exploitation into radicalisation. These  different forms of exploitation can be linked, and you will be encouraged to think about the wider experiences of the child, including the nuances behind a vulnerable children being both potential  perpetrators of crimes and victims of exploitation.

This training is provided by the Local Children's Safeguarding Board (LSCB)

Code: BH/22/0848 BHSCP- Professional difference and challenge -

This event will be an interactive session looking at the roles of professionals and how they can challenge colleagues in safeguarding decisions, both in a professional and appropriate manner. The training will look at case studies to encourage group discussion, and provide insight into how the multi agency approach can differ from each agencies perspective. It will provide information around the escalation process that is available locally, and on how staff should follow this process if they feel that a decision needs to be considered further, thus reducing the potential risks for a child or young person and their family.
