Overview

The session will cover issues of race, identity, marginalization and discrimination. We will consider associated terminology, discuss strategies to challenge racism and explore the implications of potentially damaging attitudes, language and behaviours. 


We will use case studies and a short film and there will be opportunities for small and whole group discussions. You will be able to feed back on the key issues to consider and proposed action to be taken.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to



  • challenge your own assumptions and attitudes

  • identify racism and understand why it is important to challenge

  • recognise the importance of context in responding appropriately

  • list the benefits of early intervention and have considered different techniques

  • practice the skills and approaches to challenge behaviour confidently in a fair and consistent way

  • recognise why it is important for children, particularly looked - after children of BME backgrounds, to develop a positive sense of identity

  • encourage discussion regarding the opportunities and difficulties faced when working in diverse or less diverse teams  - and be able, where necessary, to challenge established practices and procedures

It would be useful to undertake the Elearning module "Introduction to Equality & Diversity" to be completed before attending the skills workshop and can be found on the Brighton & Hove Learning Gateway.
