This course is suitable for staff and carers working with people with learning disabilities who want to develop skills in using Makaton. This is the professional route. 

Makaton is a language programme involving speech, manual signs and graphic symbols developed to help people with communication difficulties, especially people with learning disabilities.

By the end of this 3 day workshop participants will have improved and developed their skills using Makaton signs and symbols from stages 5-8.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • evaluate individual communication needs of service users

  • adapt participants’ communication to meet individual needs

  • identify opportunities to develop communication skills

  • introduce and practice signs and symbols from key stages 5-8

Please note: Participants must complete all three days training to complete the course and non-completion will result in 3 day's non-attendance charges.
