A two-day course on substance misuse related issues and interventions. This course is essential for anyone who comes into contact with drug or alcohol users in their work. This is an ideal introduction to current substance use issues in Brighton and Hove, equipping you with the knowledge and tools you will need to support your service-users, including signposting to specialist services.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to:

Day 1

  • explain the different levels of substance use

  • define the categories which substances fit into & their associated effects

  • identify reasons for substance use & the impact it can have on users, their families / carers & the wider community

  • describe the effects & impact of commonly used substances including new psychoactive substances (NPS)

Day 2

  • identify the challenges of behaviour change & practice using the cycle of change

  • list some of the factors influencing behaviour

  • define harm reduction and recovery

  • identify when & how to refer to specialist services
