Overview

This is a one day course designed for carers and support staff working with adults with learning disabilities in residential, supported living services and day services.

Attendees will leave the day feeling confident that they have the skills and knowledge go help people with learning disabilities to improve their health and wellbeing.

The day is tailored to address needs identified from issues arising form referrals to specialist learning disability services and dilemmas raised by support staff from social care on how best to maintain and support good health.

The day will consist of a mix of workshops, presentations and informaiton sharing.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to:



  • understand your role and responsibilities in enabling the people you support to achieve good health

  • understand your role in relation to establishing capacity and consent to medical care and enabling health choices for the people you support

  • understand your role and responsilbities in enabling the people you support to achieve good health

  • understand your role in relation to establishing capacity and consent to medical care and enabling health choices for the people you support

  • understand the key health issues that affect poeple with a learning disability and feel confident to utilise this knowledge and appropriate tools/resources with people you support

  • understand the range of health services available locally and feel confident in supporting people with learning disabilities to access  those services

Additional information
Attendees will receive a range of resources and tools on the day - this will include information on local services and key health tools recommended by the Community Learning Disability Team, some of which may support services in evidencing their achievement of Care Quality Commission standards.  Packs of easy read informaiton will also be available for attendees to take away to use with their service users.

Some local health promotion services will also be in attendance, giving attendees the opportunity to make new contacts and develop their understanding of the local services available.
