This course is for Adult Social Care staff and enables first aiders to give emergency first aid to someone who is injured or becomes ill. It includes both theory and practical sessions and is designed to boost confidence. 

There are a number of practical assessments throughout the course that delegates will have to complete.  There is also a multiple choice assessment paper at the end of the course.  Certificates, valid for three years, will be issued to those who have met the required standard. 

NB: Suitable clothing taking some physical activity into account should be worn. 

The programme has been amended due to the Covid-19 outbreak and infection prevention control measures and special instructions for attending this course are detailed below in the additional information.  Please ensure these are read and understood before applying and attending the programme. Learning outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • describe the role and responsibilities of the First Aider

  • assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency

  • administer cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

  • administer First Aid to a casualty who is a) unconscious (including seizure) b) choking c) wounded and bleeding d) suffering from shock

  • provide appropriate First Aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters)

  • explain how to use a defibrillator

COVID-19 Risk Assessment Guidance for Training Participants

If you or anyone you live with is from a shielded or vulnerable group please discuss this with your manager in the first instance to decide if this training is essential for you at this time. If it is decided as essential, please contact us prior to applying at so that we can ensure protective measures are in place.

Delegates will be required to adhere to the following measures

Arrival at training

Anyone exhibiting any COVID-19 symptoms should report these following your local protocals and not attend the training. Symptoms described by Public Health as the onset of a new continuous cough or a high temperature or a loss of, or change in, normal sense of taste or smell (anosmia).

Delegates are required to follow Public Health guidance and wash their hands for 20 seconds with soap and water upon arrival at the Brighton Centre and prior to entering and leaving the training room during the day. Hand sanitiser should be used before and after practical activities and sanitising wipes to wipe their desk, chair etc.

Delegates are required to put their coats or surplus clothing on the back of their chairs or in their bags, which should be stored neatly under their desk/chair.

What to bring with you to the training event

Delegates to provide own pen and paper and not to share these or course materials with other delegates.

Please bring with you any refreshments required including a bottle of water as we will not be able to provide any at this time.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and infection prevention control measures

The training will take place at the Brighton Centre (Syndicate Wing, entrance is on Russell Road at the rear of the centre)  which is a large space to ensure social distancing for this training

A stock of PPE including hand sanitiser, masks, aprons and gloves will be available throughout the training and used as required for practical exercises/assessment and as directed by the trainer. PPE will be used throughout the day and particularly when working in pairs (only when absolutely required and strictly following the Health & Safety Executive recommendations for delivering training during this period).

Delegates are asked to follow the ‘Catch it, Bin it, Kill it’ advice and please cough/sneeze into a tissue and dispose of immediately in the bin provided in the room. Failing that, cough/sneeze into bent elbow and use alcohol sanitiser immediately.

Chairs (arm rests etc) and desk/table space will be cleaned/wiped with sanitiser before course starts. Learners to only use one chair/table during course. Anti-bacterial wipes will also be available for delegates to use to wipe over the desk and chair they will be using if they wish to.

All equipment will be sanitised after use and as appropriate

Should you develop any COVID-19 symptoms following the training then you must report these through your local protocols and we can provide further information and support

Should any of the guidance be updated we will notify you prior to the course date of any changes

Please wear sensible clothing and footwear as this is a practical session.
