Makaton - Level 1 & 2 Workshop (2 days)
This workshop is suitable for staff and carers working with people with learning disabilities who want to develop skills in using Makaton.
The two training pathways for professionals and parents/carers have been combined into one route and is now delivered as Makaton Workshops Level 1 and Level 2.
The Level 1 and Level 2 Workshops combined provide the same level of knowledge and vocabulary as a complete Beginners’ or Foundation Workshop.
Day one - Level 1 workshop provides a practical introduction to the Makaton Language Programme.
The session includes discussing commonly asked questions, hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use and how to start using Makaton in everyday situations at home or work.
You will also learn the signs and symbols from Stages 1 and 2 and some of the Additional stage of the Core Vocabulary.
Day two - Level 2 workshop you will learn the signs and symbols from Stages 3 and 4 and the rest of the Additional stage of the Core Vocabulary.

By the end of this course you will be able to:
- explain the use and purpose of the makaton vocabulary
- explore the use of augmentative methods of communication
- introduce and practice signs and symbols from key stages 1-4
- introduce underpinning theory and research
