Meeting the Needs of Ethnically Minoritised Children
The session will cover issues of race, identity, marginalization and discrimination. We will consider associated terminology, discuss strategies to challenge racism and explore the implications of potentially damaging attitudes, language and behaviours.
We will watch a film which offers a young person's perspective and use this to consider how we can support BAME young people in developing a positive sense of identity. Case studies (which you will have a chance to look at before the session) will be used to bring together our deliberations. They will help in focussing our strategies of how we can work collectively towards better meeting the needs of BAME children.
- review your own assumptions and attitudes
- recognise the importance of language in addressing issues of race, identity and ethnicity
- identify racism and understand why it is important to challenge it
- consider why early intervention is important in ensuring BAME children and young people develop a positive sense of identity
- practice the skills and approaches to challenge behaviour confidently in a fair and consistent way
- be able, where necessary, to initiate dialogue linked to race and ethnicity within your team, with colleagues and with service users

Please read the attached Case Studies prior to the session.
It would be useful to undertake the Elearning module "Introduction to Equality & Diversity" to be completed before attending the skills workshop and can be found on the Brighton & Hove Learning Gateway.
