Supporting LGBT+ Children and Young People
This course will explore the issues and challenges that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans or Unsure (of their sexual orientation or gender identity) children young people face, how they are impacted by these, and how best to support them. We will learn ways to make our services safer by exploring ways of identifying and challenging homophobia, bi and transphobia at home, school, college or work.
Although trans / gender identity issues will be touched upon, the emphasis of this course is much more on sexual orientation, due to the fact we run a separate course on gender identity and trans issues
By the end of this course you will be able to
- examine relevant legislation and current LGBTU definitions & terminology
- explore the challenges faced by LGBTU children and young people and the impact of these
- explore how to prevent and challenge homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying and name-calling
- examine how to create an LGBTU inclusive and safe environment
- explore how to work with parents of LGBTU young people
- review the services and support systems available to LGBTU children and young people
