Overview
This one day course is for social workers, care managers and occupational therapists involved in assessing the needs of people living with dementia and their carers. Prior to attending this course you will already have an understanding of dementia and its psycho-social impact upon individuals and may have attended the Dementia Basic awareness course. The Dementia Advanced skills course offers some of the same material but is primarily for those who are working longer term with people with dementia. This course will equip all those involved in assessing the needs of people living with dementia and their carers to undertake person-centred needs assessments.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this course you will be able to:



  • share refreshed knowledge of dementia in relation to assessment and understand some of the major impairments and difficulties people may face as dementia progresses

  •  be mindful of the setting in which you assess the person and be able to create an environment of trust and safety which allows the person to share their concerns 

  • describe how the concept of person-centred care underpins good practice in assessment and be able to provide an approach which is holistic and strengths based 

  • identify strategies to undertake person centred needs assessment for the person and their carers and be able to work alongside family, carers, and friends respectfully and diplomatically.

  • recognise how wellbeing impacts on the needs of people living with dementia and their carers and be able to support positive risk-taking, enabling the person to live as freely as possible.

  • be able to plan how you end your involvement with the person, explain why you are finishing your work, what happens next, what services are available and how disciplines and agencies work together to assess the needs of people living with dementia
