Overview

This is a session provided by the Father's Steering Group for ASYEs (newly qualified social workers).

This one day course will explore concepts of masculinity, why fathers can be challenging to engage and the underlying reasons for the use of anger, aggression and non-engagement which some father present with.  It will give attendees the opportunity to develop practical skills and strategies to build positive working relationships with fathers, understand the duties and responsibilities Social Workers have regarding working with fathers, as well as discussing the challenges around doing this.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to



  • Explain the present barriers to working with fathers across FCL, both locally and more generally, personal, structural and historical.

  • Explain the possible implications of not working with Fathers in families with regards outcomes for children.

  • List positive outcomes in engaging fathers in work across FCL, both for families, your practice and your assessment of support need.

  • Name strategies and practical actions for engaging fathers in there future  work with families.

  • Identify future support and resources in good practice around working with fathers in families.
