A practical course teaching how to administer medicines (in original packs) in a systematic way to reduce the chance of errors. It covers the care certificate and CQC requirements for medication training.

The course includes a competence test (simulated medicines rounds) with a follow-on assessment if learners fail this.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this course you will be able to demonstrate:

  • what checks are needed on original packs (boxes and bottles) before they are administered

  • how to administer and record medicines from original packs

  • how to record medicines given from original packs

  • how to administer oral liquids, inhalers and eye drops

Additional information
Delegates receive a comprehensive workbook with a theory test that can be completed with their manager. Model answers are available on the Assessing staff competence to administer medicines workshop.

Who should attend:
Staff (both new and experienced) who administer medicines from original packs and single MDS (monitored dosage systems that contain one type of medicine). Hence it is suitable care homes.
