NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) is a package of care arranged and funded by the NHS. This supports care outside of hospital for individuals who are assessed as presenting with a primary health need rather than primary social care needs. The course looks at the CHC assessment process, key principles and eligibility criteria in order to develop a basic understanding of CHC.

Learning outcomes

After completing this course you will be able to:

  • describe the key principles of assessment and decision-making (including the well managed need principle) and how to apply them

  • contribute to the completion of well-evidenced Decision Support Tools, understanding the importance of detailed and personalised information

  • explain the key considerations and meanings behind the descriptors of four care domains – nutrition, mobility, psychological and emotional needs, and drug therapies and medication: symptom control

  • explain the relationship between section 117 of the Mental Health Act, and CHC
