Overview
This course is accredited by Mental Health First Aid England.
The course trains participants as Mental Health First Aiders, giving participants:

  • An in-depth understanding of young people’s mental health and factors that affect wellbeing

  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues

  • Confidence to reassure and support a young person in distress

  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening

  • Knowledge to help a young person recover their health by guiding them to further support – whether that’s through self-help sites, their place of learning, the NHS, or a mix – engaging with parents, carers and external agencies where appropriate

  • Ability to support a young person with a long term mental health issue or disability to thrive

  • Tools to look after your own mental wellbeing

The course is interactive and is delivered using slides, video clips, individual and group activities, discussion and case studies which you will explore as a group to embed learning.

This course is made up of both individual learning activities and a series of four live sessions on the online platform. Individual learning will be based on a combination of videos, workbook activities and reading. This can be done at your own pace in advance of each live session using an online platform. We recommend allowing between 1 and 1.5 hours per week, in addition to the live sessions.
This self-directed learning does have to be completed in order to get MHFA certification.
