This training is for Social Workers and Police Officers who take part in Section 47 Joint Investigations.

Learning outcomes

Day 1:


Objectives: By the end of the session participants should be able to:



  • Understand the different roles of the police and social worker in the Section 47 process and principles of co-operation between agencies

  • Demonstrate communication skills with families during investigations, including joint home visits with the police

  • Know about the process of the health assessment in the S47 and the role of the paediatrician

  • Understand principles of taking initial accounts without hindering the ABE interview


Day 2:


Objectives: By the end of the session participants should be able to:



  • Demonstrate effective co-operation between agencies whilst recognising and maintaining their own role.

  • Demonstrate an ability to make decisions based on the analysis of information in line with relevant legislation and procedures.

  • Assess the risk to children.

  • Display communication skills in child protection investigations.

  • Evaluate information collected during an investigation whilst remaining focused on the child.


Day 3:


Objectives: By the end of the session participants should be able to:



  • Describe the relevance of the first account interview for their partner agency and the victim.

  • Demonstrate jointly planning for a first account interview with a child victim.

  • Explain when parental consent is required to speak to a child and when it is not required. (R V Gillick/Fraser)

  • Identify the most appropriate type of questions to use during a first account interview.

  • Identify what information needs to be obtained from the victim and why.

  • Demonstrate understanding the importance of accurate record keeping.

  • Explain Sections 16, 17 and 23 of The Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act.


Day 4:


Objectives: By the end of the session participants should be able to:



  • Plan a joint visit to a parent / carer.

  • Identify the challenges that can be presented to those working in the child abuse arena.

  • Explain the principles of working in partnership with children and families as per the PAN Sussex Child Protection and Safeguarding Procedures.Explain the importance of clear communication between professionals dealing with the parents/carers of children subject of child abuse investigations.
