Overview
This course is suitable for Children’s Services and CVS practitioners and carers whose role involves lifting and handling of children and must be completed before undertaking any handling of children in the workplace.
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 came into force in January 1993. This legislation places a duty on employers to implement measures to reduce the risks to the staff who are required to undertake manual handling tasks. This course is designed to increase staff awareness of the possible injuries to themselves and to enable them to carry out transfer operations safely.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- define what is meant by Safer Handling
- explain the legal issues and risk assessment process
- describe the mechanics of back injury and other work related disorders
- demonstrate safer handling strategies when handling children
- demonstrate and practice the checks and use of slings and hoists, particularly in regard to accessing paediatric equipment
- discuss the importance of reporting in relation to safer handling
- meet statutory requirements
Additional information
VERY IMPORTANT - Applicants must read the attached COVID-19 Risk Assessment Guidance for Training Participants before attending this training.
Participants should wear appropriate clothing and flat, comfortable footwear that covers the whole of the foot as you will be actively participating in safer people handling techniques. Open toed shoes and sandals are not acceptable and you may be turned away due to health and safety reasons which will then incur a charge.
Delegates need to enter Montague House by using the wooden gate on Somerset Street. This will be open on the day, behind the wooden gate you will find the back door into the manual handling training room.
