This course enables staff to have a basic understanding of acquired brain injury and is suitable for anyone likely to be working with people who have an acquired brain injury.

It will look at the impact on people’s lives - the injured person and their family carer’s - from a person-centered approach. ABI is a ‘whole family’ experience.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this course you will be able to

  • identify areas of the brain and their function

  • list different types of ABI

  • describe common cognitive, social, psychological and physical impairments resulting from ABI

  • reflect on coping strategies from a person-centered approach

  • describe ways in which ABI can affect decision making and its implications for professionals working with capacity

  • list resources available for people with acquired brain injury and professionals working to support them
