- What is meant by 'conflict' and 'aggression'
- The difference between aggression, passivity, passive aggression and assertiveness
- The link between anger and fear: the Cycle of Aggression
- The role of the worker in the prevention of aggression. incl. promoting a non-violent environment
- Body language; consistent messages; remaining present and focusing
- Being risk aware; effective communication and planning
- Verbal calming techniques and ways to de-escalate
- The importance of staying safe: how the law underpins safe practice
- Essential good practice issues including: Supervision, risk assessment; teamwork; record keeping; consistent approaches; effective communication; understanding the limits of the role; staying safe; post incident reviews and de-briefs
- The key principles of the organisation’s policies in terms of staying safe e.g. lone working
- The responsibilities of the employer and employee & H&S legislation
- Awareness of personal safety online, ways to protect your privacy
- A range of primary (proactive) strategies, including professional boundaries, planning and information, communicating
- A range of secondary (preventive) strategies, including calming techniques, observation skills and responses to warning signs
- A range of tertiary (reactive) strategies, including knowing when to withdraw, using emergency services, reporting and recording
- Reference to BHCC policies & procedures including Client of Concern Register, online incident reporting, generic & personal safety risk assessments, local government standards, guidance on wellbeing & support, threat responses and Personal Safety Leads
