Code: BH/21/1626 Career conversations and progression for BME staff

As part of Our People Promise commitment to be a fair and inclusive place to work, we will be piloting a 6-month  Diverse Talent development programme to develop and retain staff from groups under-represented in the council’s workforce.  Before opening the programme to applications, we are offering this preliminary session to support interested participants and help them decide if the 6-month programme is right for them.

The council’s workforce data shows that our Black & Minority Ethnic (BME) staff are not proportionately represented at grades SO1/2 and above.  This session is aimed to support BME staff at grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 with their personal and professional development, increasing confidence to progress in their career and to overcome barriers in accessing opportunities and gaining promotion.  During the session we will consider how you see your career progressing, what you would like to achieve and complete an action plan to help you do this.

We will give a full overview of the proposed 6-month programme, due to launch in January 2022 so that you can decide whether you would like to apply.   There is no obligation from attending this preliminary session and you may decide that the session content meets your needs right now, or choose to pursue another of our options to help develop your career.

The session will be delivered via Zoom by Lesley Aitcheson, Ceruleanblu. Lesley has delivered our successful Anti-Racism training and is looking forward to working with you on this new and exciting offer.

Code: BH/21/1294 Cultural Intelligence – How to Work Inclusively with Diverse Children and Families

Brighton & Hove is comprised of a diverse community with a range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. It is crucial that practitioners are skilled and competent in engaging with families from different cultural backgrounds, to work in an anti-discriminatory way and ensure that issues of race and culture are integrated into assessment and decision-making.
Please note that after the first morning session with the facilitator, you will be expected to complete a short practical exercise in the afternoon either on your own or in small groups. You will then get the opportunity to review this with the facilitator, in the morning on the second day.

Code: BH/21/1385 Hoarding Awareness Workshop

Most hoarded properties are ‘cleared out’ by cleaning teams. This leads to greater distress and more intense hoarding activity. Clients with hoarding disorder need understanding and empathy in order to help them to develop new behaviours to cope with their excess belongings. This course gives an overview of the condition and draws on the experiences of the practitioner/trainer in developing skills to work with people who hoard.

This course is aimed at housing staff and social workers, and takes into consideration the knowledge and skills statement for social workers.
