Code: BH/21/1419 Assessing Staff Competence to Administer Medication (Adult social care) 2 days (Zoom) (EVENT FULL)

This course is aimed at managers and seniors that look at the process by which medicines are managed.

This practical workshop provides the knowledge, materials and skills to care providers to create and manage a formal system to assess staff competence.

Care Quality Commission (CQC) requires care providers to have a formal system to assess staff competence to administer medication. In this workshop we will assess your competence to administer medicines against a structured competence assessment checklist.

We will then assess you as competent to assess others (against this same checklist). You will be assessed through a combination of 1:1 direct observation with actual medicines, simulated medicines rounds, video assessments and a theory assessment.

Please note: you must complete and pass the pre-course elearning modules, two virtual sessions and summative assessment before being awarded the certificate of completion.

Code: BH/21/1647 Emergency First Aid at Work - for council employees and schools ONLY (EVENT FULL)

Who is this course for?

This training is for those people employed by Brighton and Hove City Council or Brighton and Hove Schools who have a specific responsibility at work, to provide basic first aid to people in a range of first aid situations.

If however, you are taking a lead in first aid in your workplace, the three day First Aid at Work course may be more appropriate for you.

Please note: there are specific courses for staff who that work in Adult Social Care or Children Services.

What is the purpose of this course?

The course aims to enable delegates to attain the knowledge and practical competencies needed, to deal with a range of first aid situations and/or take on the role of first aider in the workplace.

How are delegates assessed?

There are four practical assessments that delegates will have to complete throughout the course and these will be observed by the trainer. During the course the trainer will also carry out on-going assessment to assess the delegates’ knowledge, skills and understanding related to the assessment criteria.  As there is an element of physical activity on this course suitable footwear and clothing should be worn. There is also a theory assessment/multiple choice paper at the end of the course to assess competence and gain certification.

The delegate will need to demonstrate, without assistance from a third party, practical tasks such as CPR with the casualty on the floor to simulate a real-life situation. If the delegate is unable to carry out this practical assessment, for example, because they cannot kneel, then they will not pass the course and will not gain the qualification.  In exceptional circumstances, delegates who are not able to kneel may be able to carry out the task from a standing position, and this is acceptable.

Re-certification

This qualification is valid for a period of 3 years and will be issued to those who have met the required standard. The learner needs to re-take the qualification before the certificate expiry date to remain qualified by attending a full day Emergency First Aid at Work course.

IMPORTANT: The First Aid Training Programme has been amended due to the Covid-19 outbreak and infection prevention control measures and special instructions for attending this course are attached.  Please ensure these are read and understood before applying and attending the course. Delegates can also request copies of the risk assessments that cover this training course.

Please note: Whilst the course is delivered in a covid secure way, please consider with your manager whether it is essential for you to attend as the delegates will be a mix of staff from different workplaces.

Code: BH/21/1463 Overcoming Overwhelm online - 2 sessions (Zoom)

Overwhelm – a personal plan

What is overwhelm and what causes it?

Being overwhelmed occurs when there is too much of something going on – we feel
like we’re drowning or being buried.

This can happen for a number of reasons, but a feeling of too many things to do, too
much work, too much work pressure and too many deadlines can be a major
contributor.

Feeling overwhelmed has repercussions on the whole of our life. It can make us feel
tired, interfere with our sleep and make it difficult for us to think rationally. These
negative emotions can make it more difficult for your body to fight off infections and
can have a physical effect with fatigue, neck and upper-back pain, for example.
Add all this together and it can affect every area of life, impacting our social lives and
relationships on top of the work challenges.

All these feelings distract us from being effective and efficient and that, in turn, leads
to lowered ‘performance’ and sets up a vicious cycle dragging us further down.
This can lead to procrastination (making things worse!) and creative avoidance –
doing things that don’t really matter to distract ourselves or things that give us
pleasure, putting off the real work further.

Online sessions via zoom of two x 2 hours (you will need to attend both sessions)

This four hour session offers a practical and experiential opportunity to understand,
appreciate and acknowledge that different situations trigger people in different ways.

What one person will find ‘easy’ another may find ‘challenging’ and adding to levels
of stress.

Once we have an understanding of our personal ‘triggers’ we are then in a better
position to find the solutions to manage our stress, our workloads, and find effective
ways that enable us to feel more ‘in control’.
