This is the third instalment of our core courses which explores how agencies across the city work together to keep children safe through the Child Protection Conference, and Core Group processes. This includes a presentation by the Youth Advocacy Project which works with children & young people to ensure that their voice is taken into consideration. This course has recently been reviewed and updated by the CPRO (Child Protection Review Officers), in line with their restructured service. It will help you understand the aims, purpose and process of a Child Protection Conference and Core Group and to become a more effective participant in that process.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. It mainly affects women, however men can get it also. Learn about the sign and symptoms, the importance of early diagnosis, screening eligibility and how to be more ‘Breast Aware’.

More than 200 females in Brighton and Hove are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Found early, cancer can be cured, treated, managed and lived with.

The Speak Up Against Cancer team are working to raise awareness of the importance of the breast & cervical screening programmes and self-checking, as well as early signs and symptoms. The team are fully trained, local volunteers with an experience of cancer. They believe that the power of lived experience is extremely powerful and are keen to hear from other local people whose cancer was caught early and successfully treated.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic the popular Communicating with Impact workshops will be delivered remotely instead of face to face for the rest of 2020.

This has given us the opportunity to review its success and identify different ways to deliver the training, as well as the further embedding of the learning.  We have commissioned 6 pilot remote sessions to support your continual development as a manager. 

Please note that this learning consists of pre course work (approximately 30mins), two, (2 hour) online workshops, 2 weeks apart.   Please ensure that you are available to attend both sessions.

This workshop is a course about presenting with confidence, and delivering an impactful message.  You will be expected to deliver a presentation via video, and get feedback from other delegates.  If you are unwilling to deliver a presentation to improve your practice, this isn't the learning that will support you now.

Code: BH/21/0056 First Aid at Work 2 Day Recertification

The first aid training programme has been amended due to the Covid-19 pandemic and infection prevention control measures and special instructions for attending this course are provided in the attached guidance document. Please ensure that this is read and understood before applying and attending this course. Delegates can also request a copy of the risk assessments that cover this training course.

This 2 day recertification course is specifically for qualified First Aiders who currently hold a current ‘in date’ 3 year First Aid at Work Certificate nearing expiry who need to renew their qualification for a further 3 years and refresh their knowledge and skills. 

Eligibility – You can only attend this course if -

  • you are a council employee or work in Brighton and Hove City Schools and are required to remain as a qualified First Aider at work
  • you have previously attended the 3 day First Aid at Work course and your current certificate is due to expire
  • your current certificate will still be in date at the time of the course BUT is due to expire in the following 6 months or has not expired by more than 30 days or you meet the HSE criteria for certificate extensions during COVID-19 pandemic
COVID-19 - extensions to certificates

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has confirmed an extension to first aid certificates expiring on or after the 16 March until the 31st October or for 6 months whichever is the latest. All certificates must be renewed by 31 March 2021.
 
NB: Suitable clothing and footwear taking some physical activity into account should be worn.

Code: BH/20/0536 Makaton - Level 1 & 2 Workshop (4 half days) (Microsoft Teams) (EVENT FULL)

This workshop is suitable for staff and carers working with people with learning disabilities who want to develop skills in using makaton and will be delivered virtually over 4 half days over 7, 8, 14 & 15 January 2021.
 
The two training pathways for professionals and parents/carers have been combined into one route and is now delivered as Makaton Workshops Level 1 and Level 2.

The Level 1 and Level 2 Workshops combined provide the same level of knowledge and vocabulary as a complete Beginners’ or Foundation Workshop. 

Day one - Level 1 workshop provides a practical introduction to the Makaton Language Programme.

The session includes discussing commonly asked questions, hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use and how to start using Makaton in everyday situations at home or work.

You will also learn the signs and symbols from Stages 1 and 2 and some of the Additional stage of the Core Vocabulary.

Day two - Level 2 workshop you will learn the signs and symbols from Stages 3 and 4 and the rest of the Additional stage of the Core Vocabulary.

This course looks at the main principles of adult safeguarding in line with the Care Act and the Making Safeguarding Personal approach. It explores practice issues regarding abuse or neglect to adults, including the responsibilities of staff in preventing and reporting. This course is aimed at customer facing staff who support adults.
