This module is the first level of continuing professional development (post-qualification) for social workers. The focus is on consolidating participants’ knowledge and skills in communicating with children, acquired during their professional qualifying programmes.

The module is delivered in a workshop format (8 x 3 hour monthly sessions) with an explicit emphasis on pedagogical approaches that encourage learning from experience.

The Talking and Listening to Children research project’s web-based digital resources provides the framework for the module, with practitioners equipped with a ‘Kitbag’ for use in their interactions with young children and their families.

This module enables you to meet the requirements of the relevant Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF) domains and the Knowledge and Skills Statements.

You will have access to the University’s Library and will benefit from peer support throughout the programme

Code: BH/19/0609 Emergency First Aid - Adult Social Care

The course, for Adult Social Care Staff, enables first aiders to give emergency first aid to someone who is injured or becomes ill. It includes both theory and practical sessions and is designed to boost confidence. There is no final exam however delegates are assessed throughout the course and certificates, valid for three years, are issued to those who have reached the required standard.

Each delegate will be provided with a first aid manual.

Code: BH/20/0565 Managing the Transition from Primary to Secondary School for Children living with Parental Conflict – Developing Mechanisms of Support

PLEASE NOTE:  This event is designed for school staff and any professional involved in pupil’s transitions to PACA and King's School, and all their feeder primary schools.  If you are not associated with these schools please book on one of the alternative workshops.

This half-day workshop will examine the impact of parental conflict on children and young people, and key messages from research and practice will be explored.

Utilizing a number of case scenarios, those attending will be asked to consider the kinds of issues, challenges and dilemmas that occur when trying to engage and work with parents, their children and young people affected by conflict within the family – matters that may often be manifest in school.

Participants will have opportunities to think about ways of engaging resistant parents, opening difficult conversations and supporting children both within the school context and during the transition from primary to secondary education.

This is a bespoke course is deliver by Tavistock Relationships.

This course looks at the main principles of adult safeguarding in line with the Care Act and the Making Safeguarding Personal approach. It explores practice issues regarding abuse or neglect to service users, including the responsibilities of staff in preventing and reporting. This half day interactive course is specifically designed for foster carers and social workers who support migrant children.  It will provide participants with a basic understanding of what age assessment is and when an age assessment is carried out.
