Code: BH/22/1062 Epilepsy Awareness, Seizure Management and Buccal Midazolam - Adults (EVENT FULL)

This face to face course examines the classification and management of seizures in the context of adults with learning disabilities.  It also covers the role of staff in supporting people with epilepsy, the risks and the psychosocial impact on the person living with epilepsy, first aid for seizures and the administration of emergency medication buccal midazolam.

The guidelines around buccal midazolam/emergency medication administration training state that clear face to face training is best practice.

The teaching resource will be led by an experienced trainer who is able to answer any bespoke questions around epilepsy and who can facilitate conversations around specific issues relating to the people the delegates will be supporting in their roles.

The learning gained during the session will be supported by an Epilespy Handout (workbook) which must be read by all learners prior to attending the session.  This pre-reading should take you about 30-60 minutes.  The Epilepsy Handout will be attached to the confirmation of a place email.

At the end of the session there are 2 exercises around areas of competence.

1. We perform a practical simulation where the process of providing seizure first aid and administering of buccal midazolam is performed by delegates in groups of 3 or 4 at a time under the supervision of the trainer (there is no need to get on the floor for this simulation).

2.   Is an “open book” assessment meaning that learners are allowed to refer to the Epilepsy Handout (workbook) during a paper based theory test assessment. This will be completed whilst the delegates are not performing in their simulation.

For successful completion of this course and to be awarded a certificate of completion delegates must take part and pass the practical simulation and theory test according to the trainers assessment.  Delegates can re-do the theory test 3 times before needing to re-attend the course and any specific learning support can be arranged and worked with as required to ensure all people have a fair and objective assessment of their ability.

Once the delegates have passed and the register has been marked certificates will be issued.

VERY IMPORTANT – it is essential that you and your manager read the attached COVID-19 Risk Assessment Guidance for Training Participants before attending this training.
