Code: BH/21/0486 BHSCP - Enabling & Supporting Compliance: Working with Disguised Compliance and Forceful Counter Argument in Safeguarding

Disguised compliance involves parents giving the appearance of co-operating with child welfare agencies to avoid raising suspicions and allay concerns.

Published case reviews highlight that professionals sometimes delay or avoid interventions due to parental disguised compliance. It is hard for professionals to work with families where there may be lack of cooperation and/or a hostile attitude.

When there are child welfare/protection issues, a failure to engage with the family may have serious implications and non-intervention is not an option.

This course has been produced to support professionals working with these problematic dynamics.

Code: BH/21/0708 Emergency First Aid - Adult Social Care

This course is for Adult Social Care staff and enables first aiders to give emergency first aid to someone who is injured or becomes ill. The objective of the qualification is to benefit delegates by enabling them to attain the knowledge and practical competencies needed to deal with a range of first aid situations and/or take on the role of first aider in the workplace.

This qualification is for people who have a specific responsibility at work, or in voluntary and community activities, to provide basic first aid to people in a range of first aid situations.

The programme has been amended due to the Covid-19 outbreak and infection prevention control measures and special instructions for attending this course are attached.  Please ensure these are read and understood before applying and attending the programme. Delegates can also request a full copy of the risk assessments that cover this training course.

Please note: - this course is open to adult social care staff across the council and across the Independent Voluntary Sector. Whilst the course is delivered in a covid secure way, please consider with your manager whether it is essential for you to attend as the delegates may be a mix of staff from different workplaces.

There are four practical assessments that delegates will have to complete throughout the course, and these will be observed by the trainer.   During the course the trainer will also carry out on-going assessment to assess the delegates’ knowledge, skills and understanding related to the assessment criteria.  As there is an element of physical activity on this course suitable footwear and clothing should be worn. 
There is also a theory assessment/multiple choice paper at the end of the course to assess competence and gain certification. 

The delegate will need to demonstrate, without assistance from a third party, practical tasks such as CPR with the casualty on the floor to simulate a real-life situation. If the delegate is unable to carry out this practical assessment, for example, because they cannot kneel, then they will not pass the course and will not gain the qualification.  In exceptional circumstances, delegates who are not able to kneel may be able to carry out the task from a standing position, and this is acceptable.

This qualification is valid for a period of 3 years, and will be issued to those who have met the required standard.. The learner needs to re-take the qualification before the certificate expiry date to remain qualified by attending a full one day/six hour Emergency First Aid at Work course.

Delegates will be provided with a course manual to keep.

Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes for all ages that provide opportunities for existing staff to acquire new skills, knowledge and behaviours in their existing roles or enable new apprentices to be recruited in the council.  

The Government has implemented a number of reforms; to increase quality and quantity of apprenticeships. The reforms include new employer driven Apprenticeship Standards, Public Sector Targets and an Apprenticeship Levy.

This bite-size session will be an opportunity for managers to;

  • meet the Apprenticeship Team,
  • explore opportunities and issues,
  • ask questions and gain a better understanding of new apprenticeship landscape
  • understand the 20% off job training gudance
  • understand your role in supporting the apprenticeship strategy
  • cover some of The Education Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) rules that the council are governed by
  • support you in your journey in recruiting an apprentice or supporting existing staff.

This workshop session will cover issues of race, identity, marginalization and discrimination. We will consider associated terminology, discuss strategies to challenge racism and explore the implications of potentially damaging attitudes, language and behaviours. 

We will watch a film which offers a young person's perspective and use this to consider how we can support BAME young people in developing a positive sense of identity. Case studies (which you will have a chance to look at before the session) will be used to bring together our deliberations. They will help in focussing our strategies of how we can work collectively towards better meeting the needs of BAME children.

This course will be useful for anyone working with older people and anyone with an interest in enhancing their understanding of self esteem and wellbeing. 
The course explores the concept of self esteem and draws on thinking in psychology to look in depth at what self esteem might consist of.

It goes on to explore the impact of ageing on self esteem and things that are important to consider when working with older people.

The course also draws on participative research with older people into what contributes to or detracts from wellbeing,  and focusses on how relationships and good practice can make a big contribution to enhancing self esteem and wellbeing in later life.

This 30 credit module is designed to enable senior practitioners and managers in children’s services.

Teaching and learning will take place in larger group sessions and smaller practice development discussion groups.

Themes covered include:

• Key concepts and challenges in risk decision-making
• The legal, policy and practice context
• Critical perspectives on risk
• Organisational risk
• Machine learning and risk decision-making
• What works in Children’s Services?
• Learning from serious case reviews

Early on, you will identify a key challenge in risk-analysis and decision-making within your professional role, along with a goal you would like to achieve in relation to this. You will undertake an action learning project, enabling you to develop your practice and/or that of your team. Peer discussion within small groups, and peer feedback through sharing progress on your project (including via the virtual learning environment) will help you frame effective risk management practices.

Evidence of learning is incorporated into your portfolio.

This module can be taken as part of a PGCert, PGDip or as a stand alone module.
