Code: BH/18/1598 Emotion Coaching

Emotion Coaching has been found to help children and young people better understand their emotions, as well as regulate, improve and take ownership of their behaviour. Emotion Coached children and young people:

·         Achieve more academically in school
·         Are more popular
·         Have fewer behavioural problems
·         Have fewer infectious illnesses
·         Are more emotionally stable
·         Are more resilient

                                       (Gottman 1997)

Emotion Coaching can also help practitioners to be more sensitive to the needs of children and young people, create more consistent responses to behaviour, feel more ‘in control’ during incidents, and promote positive relationships between adults and children.

Code: BH/19/0218 Families, Children & Learning Staff Engagement Sessions

These short sessions, lasting approximately 1.5 hours each, will be run by various members of the Families, Children & Learning Directorate Management Team (FCL DMT).

They will provide an opportunity for everyone to come together in small informal groups, to think about the work we currently do and consider how we can move forward as one directorate to deliver not just good, but great services for all our customers.

Each session will open with a showing of the short Annual Report video and, with local elections fast approaching, we will take the opportunity to discuss what we think is important for newly elected Councillors to know about our services, our service users and our working partnerships. The sessions will conclude with an opportunity for Questions & Answers.

Code: BH/18/1177 Children's CPD Module - Risk & Decision Making in Children's Services

To log your interest for this CPD module please click on “request a place" by 30th June 2018.

This 30 credit module is designed to enable senior practitioners and managers in children’s services to develop their knowledge and skills in current law, policy and research relating to risk analysis and decision-making and consider how these can be applied in day-to-day practice and/or management across a range of work place settings and roles.

You will learn about key perspectives, theory and the evidence base for risk and you will be taught in large groups. Additional smaller seminar groups provide a space for practitioners and managers to consider role-related challenges. Both inform work-based action learning projects, as well as critical reflection and the development of risk management practice. Peer feedback through ‘sharing’ progress on risk projects in seminars and via the virtual learning environment is an assessment requirement, and evidence of learning is incorporated into your portfolio.

Themes covered include:

Key concepts and challenges in decision-making
The legal, policy and practice context
Perspectives on Risk
Supervision, accountability and working in a political environment
Risk and risky situations: safe and creative strategies
Learning from serious case reviews
