Code: BH/17/860 Children's CPD Module - Practitioner Research

This 15 credit module is only available on request to practitioners undertaking the PGDip.  It provides experienced staff with the opportunity to develop their professional role through action research.  Applications will be looked at on a case by case basis.

The module starts with an initial meeting, followed by a supported research day, two action learning sets and an individual tutorial. Action learning sets will enable you to present your work – issues, dilemmas, critical incidents - and receive consultative supervision from your peer group. You will have access to a virtual learning environment for additional learning support and resources. You will be expected to engage in autonomous self-directed learning, critical self-reflection, and practice development through research.

This course covers the essential elements of food safety to enable you to safely prepare and handle food and to support people with their nutrition and hydration needs.

Course attendees will be given a certificate of attendance. There is a multiple choice assessment at the end of the course which will be marked and given to participants to discuss with their manager upon return to work. The Workforce Development Team will contact the managers of participants who do not pass the assessment.

This course will build on the key points explored in our CSE 1 course and provide workers with the confidence and skills to work with young people around issues relating to CSE. The day will include a very brief review of the key messages from the basic training therefore this course is only appropriate for those who have previously undergone CSE training.

This course explores ways of working directly with young people around CSE in more detail and encourages familiarisation with the resources available. There is also an enhanced focus on online safety and police disruption techniques as well as an outline of the local picture of CSE with reference to serious case review recommendations.

This training is provided by the Local Children's Safeguarding Board (LSCB)

This 3-hour interactive course is for private and independent care homes/domiciliary carers.  The course will look at the critical aspects for medicines management using a practical approach. The course is delivered by pharmacists and technicians from the local Clinical Commissioning Group who have a wealth of experience in both hospital and the community. The course has been developed locally based on local training needs and links into the Brighton and Hove City Council and Clinical Commissioning Group medicines management policies.

This interactive one day update to the ‘Attachment’ course will help carers and adopters explore and understand why the theory of attachment is so important and how to apply skills that will aid the development of a more secure base for the child/young person.

The Fostering Service is using a new model called the Secure Base Model and this course is an introduction to the model for those who have already attended Attachment training.

There will be an opportunity to share and reflect on the experiences of carers and adopters who attend.

This 30 credit postgraduate-level module offers opportunities to social workers and other professionals working in early years, education, health and young people’s services, to further develop their understanding and capacity to work effectively with infants, children and young people. To undertake this module you must be in a professional role where you are regularly engaging and communicating with children and young people. You may have previously undertaken child observation exercises in a training context, but this module offers a more in-depth and critical experience designed to underpin specialist practice.

Please note - there is a requirement to observe a child not known to you on six occasions as part of this module. You need to factor this in to your planning and discuss with your manager before applying.

This module can be taken as part of a PGCert, PGDip or as a stand alone module. See application information in 'attached document' for further details of modules, pathways and awards.
