Code: BH/22/0844 BHSCP - Sussex Statutory Child Death Review Process - (Working with the Families)

These sessions which are run by the Child Death Review Lead Nurse and Child Death Review Specialist Nurse, will look at the current protocols around child death. The processes of gaining information while balancing this against the fact you are dealing with a bereavement within a family.

Every family has the right to have their child’s death properly reviewed.  Families desperately want to know what happened, how the events could have occurred, what the cause of death was and whether it could have been prevented.  This is important in terms of grieving.

These sessions are apprpriate for all staff who work within safeguarding, and deal with families, children and young people.

Code: BH/22/0571 BHSCP - Trauma Informed Practice a Multi-Agency Approach

Trauma, particularly in early childhood, can have severe impact on a child throughout their life. It can manifest as behavioural issues, and have a severe effect on both their mental and physical health. When they grow older they may can be drawn into violence, criminal activity, and self harm, as well as being more likely to engage in health-harming behaviours. These issues can continue to have effect on the manner in which they interact with others throughout their life, including their own children, and they are more likely to become a victim of abuse, or a potential perpetrator, in their own relationships.

We often refer to these traumatic events Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE). Almost half of the adult population of England have had some form of adversity within their childhood or adolescence. These can include bereavement, neglect, violence, being witness to domestic abuse, sexual assault and substance use by parents and carers.

This training event will raise awareness of the issues relating to working with children and families where there has been some form of trauma. This is a joint enterprise between the Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB), Public Health and partners from Sussex University

Code: BH/22/0186 BHSCP-Suicide Awareness (Working with Young People) - (16yrs & over)

These training sessions are aimed at professionals in contact/working with families in East and West Sussex and Brighton and Hove who haven’t attended a Suicide awareness course in the last three years.

They are being run as a colaboration between all three Safeguarding Children Partnerships across Sussex and delivered by colleagues from Grassroots.

Course options:

Working with young people 16+ and adults : identifying, engaging and referring/sign posting individuals with suicidal thoughts and behaviours

The majority of those who die by suicide are not in contact with mental health services – they are right here in our community. Many children and young people, and their parents or carers, are either having thoughts of suicide, and an increasing number are attempting or even completing suicide.

These basic awareness courses will equip professionals working with families to pick up on vulnerabilities, identify who might be at risk and start an open conversation about suicide, as this is one of the best way we know to prevent suicide.

We know this suicide is something that many professionals find it hard to talk about, especially with young people and their parents or carers.
