Ensuring that children and young people in Brighton & Hove are protected effectively from sexual harm and violent exploitation is a priority for Brighton & Hove BHSCP
Day One of our two training courses on exploitation looks at different ways that children & young people may be exploited by those who have power over them by virtue of their age, gender, intellect, physical strength and/or economic or other resources. Violence, coercion and intimidation commonly occur in exploitation, and these situations are often characterised by the child or young person’s limited availability of choice resulting from their social/economic and/or emotional vulnerability
This course is facilitated by The Wise Project, and there will be a strong focus on Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE), how to identify this abuse, and disrupt the exploitation. You will also look at the emerging threat of Child Criminal Exploitation (CCE) and County Lines activity, as well as considering what may make a young person vulnerable to exploitation into radicalisation. These different forms of exploitation can be linked, and you will be encouraged to think about the wider experiences of the child, including the nuances behind a vulnerable children being both potential perpetrators of crimes and victims of exploitation.

This 15 credit module is only available on request to practitioners undertaking the PGDip. It provides experienced staff with the opportunity to develop their professional role through practice-based research. Applications will be looked at on a case by case basis.
You will identify an issue, challenge, knowledge gap or service need relevant to your professional role for which you, your organisation and/or service users would benefit from further exploration or development.
You will learn how to critically examine what is already known (through a literature review) and to apply this knowledge through research informed practice, enabling you to develop your professional role and improve your practice.
You will participate in research methodology seminars, and a virtual learning environment for additional learning support and resources. You will be able to discuss your plans, present your work – issues, dilemmas, critical incidents - and share your learning in conversation with your peer group. You also will be expected to engage in self-directed learning, critical self-reflection, and practice development through research.

To raise awareness of the impact of falls and fractures within the community and care homes. To offer strategies to reduce the risk and support your residents or clients to remain safe and independent. Training provided by Wendy Mitchell, Falls Specialist Practitioner from the Osteoporosis and Falls Prevention Service, Sussex Community NHS Trust.
This Falls Prevention Awareness course is specifically for carer workers in care homes, and carers who work in people’s own homes. Please note there is a separate course specifically for care home managers provided by the Falls and Fracture Prevention Service, Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust. Who is this course for?
This qualification is for people who have a specific responsibility at work, or in voluntary and community activities, to provide basic first aid to people in a range of first aid situations.
This course is for those that will be acting as lead First Aiders in their workplace and will provide delegates with a recognised First Aid at Work qualification. Upon completion of the course, First Aiders will be able to take control and provide assistance in an emergency situation at their workplace. They will be able to respond to an accident or illness promptly, effectively and safely.
What does the trainng cover?
Topics covered include: resuscitation and CPR, dealing with wounds, bleeding, burns, scalds, heart conditions and minor injuries.
How are delegates assessed?
There are six practical assessments, observed by the trainer throughout the course and two theory assessment/multiple choice question papers.
In addition, the trainer will carry out on-going assessment to assess the delegates knowledge, skills and understanding related to the assessment criteria.
To assess competence and gain certification, the delegate will need to demonstrate, without assistance from a third party, practical tasks such as CPR with the casualty on the floor to simulate a real-life situation. If the delegate is unable to carry out this practical assessment, for example because they cannot kneel, then they will not pass the course and will not gain the qualification. In exceptional circumstances, delegates who are unable to kneel, may be able to carry out the task from a standing position, and this is acceptable.
On passing the course, the delegate will be issued with a First Aid at Work certificate valid for a period of 3 years.
Delegates willl need to retake the qualification before their certificate expiry date to remain qualified, by attending a two day First Aid at Work Re-Certification course.
When attending a two day Re-Certification course, delegates must be aware that the syllabus is covered at a significantly faster pace, in the understanding that learners are familiar with the topics.
If an employee’s certificate expires, they are no longer considered competent to act as a First Aider in the workplace. It is the responsibility of the delegate to ensure they book on to a Re-certification course before their certificate expires.
IMPORTANT - the first aid training programme has been amended due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Infection prevention control measures and special instructions for attending this course are provided in the attached guidance document. Please ensure that this is read and understood before applying and attending this course. Delegates can also request a copy of the risk assessments that cover this training course.
Please note: Whilst the course is delivered in a covid secure way, please consider with your manager whether it is essential for you to attend as the delegates will be a mix of staff from different workplaces.

Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes for all ages that provide opportunities for existing staff to acquire new skills, knowledge and behaviours in their existing roles or enable new apprentices to be recruited in the council.
The Government has implemented a number of reforms; to increase quality and quantity of apprenticeships. The reforms include new employer driven Apprenticeship Standards, Public Sector Targets and an Apprenticeship Levy.

The council has recently taken membership of Business Disability Forum (BDF), a not for profit membership organisation with 30 years’ experience of working with business to transform the life chances of disabled people as employees and consumers.
BDF will provide us with a wealth of practical advice, resources, toolkits, events and support, and this session aims to explain the benefits of membership to managers.
The manager network meetings are two hour sessions, introduced and facilitated by your management peers. Each standalone session covers a different topic relevant to managers to help you develop and offer a chance to get together, albeit virtually. It's a great chance to get away from emails and day to day work to reflect on your own management practice.
All managers (and aspiring managers) are welcome and you don’t need to have attended any of the previous sessions to be able to come to this one.
