This session is aimed at staff who manage others in adult assessment services. There is a separate, similar course aimed at non-management staff.
The session will increase your knowledge of and skills around leading good practice in accountable decision making. It will provide an opportunity for you to reflect on your role within the context of a strengths based, risk enablement approach.
It will enhance your understanding of legal literacy and develop your critical thinking skills through considering recent legal cases and reflecting on good practice in decision making.
This is the third instalment of our core courses which explores how agencies across the city work together to keep children safe through the Child Protection Conference, and Core Group processes. This includes a presentation by the Youth Advocacy Project which works with children & young people to ensure that their voice is taken into consideration. This course has recently been reviewed and updated by the CPRO (Child Protection Review Officers), in line with their restructured service. It will help you understand the aims, purpose and process of a Child Protection Conference and Core Group and to become a more effective participant in that process.

This session covers the important features in Microsoft Teams to help you to communicate and collaborate effectively using teams and channels. It is run by the Connecting You training team Matt Fleming, James Hardy and Sam Gathern. This ‘Basics’ session is designed for those less confident when it comes to learning new software or with no previous experience of using Microsoft Teams.
As part of the session, attendees will join the Welcome to Microsoft Teams at BHCC teams. This is a space where you can find useful information, test the functionality in Teams and ask questions.
This course covers the essential features in Microsoft Teams required for managing your team, such as managing team settings, membership and communications. The course will train you to create, manage, maintain and close your collaborative workspaces effectively and securely.
Overwhelm – a personal plan
What is overwhelm and what causes it?
Being overwhelmed occurs when there is too much of something going on – we feel
like we’re drowning or being buried.
This can happen for a number of reasons, but a feeling of too many things to do, too
much work, too much work pressure and too many deadlines can be a major
Feeling overwhelmed has repercussions on the whole of our life. It can make us feel
tired, interfere with our sleep and make it difficult for us to think rationally. These
negative emotions can make it more difficult for your body to fight off infections and
can have a physical effect with fatigue, neck and upper-back pain, for example.
Add all this together and it can affect every area of life, impacting our social lives and
relationships on top of the work challenges.
All these feelings distract us from being effective and efficient and that, in turn, leads
to lowered ‘performance’ and sets up a vicious cycle dragging us further down.
This can lead to procrastination (making things worse!) and creative avoidance –
doing things that don’t really matter to distract ourselves or things that give us
pleasure, putting off the real work further.
Online sessions via zoom of two x 2 hours (you will need to attend both sessions)
This four hour session offers a practical and experiential opportunity to understand,
appreciate and acknowledge that different situations trigger people in different ways.
What one person will find ‘easy’ another may find ‘challenging’ and adding to levels
Once we have an understanding of our personal ‘triggers’ we are then in a better
position to find the solutions to manage our stress, our workloads, and find effective
ways that enable us to feel more ‘in control’.

This session will help staff to identify microaggressions, stereotyping and language and consider their impact and commit to challenging them both in themselves, and in their colleagues.
The trainers will use teamwork, creative thinking and game-based learning to solve sensitive and complex Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and Anti-racism problems.
Before attending this practical session you must have completed the knowledge and theory element of safer people handling by either completing:
‘Safer People Handling – Knowledge and Theory Session’ via Teams or ‘Safer People Handling - Adults – Interim COVID-19 Distance Learning’ elearning.
This session follows on from the Teams session / distance learning and covers transfer techniques and the use of transfer aids. Due to Covid-19 this training session will only be covering the practical element.
This practical session is only for Brighton and Hove City Council Adult Social Care staff. This practical session is open to both new starters and staff refreshing.
Certificate - please note your certificate for this course will only show you having covered the practical elements of Safer People Handling. To be fully certificated for Safer People Handling this certificate must be accompanied by the certificate covering the knowledge and theory element of Safer People Handling. It is expected that both courses/sessions are completed within a reasonable timeframe.
The programme has been amended due to the Covid-19 outbreak and infection prevention control measures and special instructions for attending this course are detailed in the attached document. Please ensure these are read and understood before applying and attending the programme. Delegates can also request a full copy of the risk assessments that cover this training course.
Please note: - this course is open to adult social care staff across the council. Whilst the course is delivered in a covid secure way, please consider with your manager whether it is essential for you to attend as the delegates may be a mix of staff from different workplaces. Where possible, if you are able to attend with another member of staff in your organisation you will be placed together.
The practical training session will take place with a maximum of 4 delegates and will last for 3 hours. If you are unable to participate in the practical training session please do not book on this training session as you must be fit and well to participate.
During these current times delegates will need to enter Montague House by using the wooden gate on Somerset Street. This will be open on the day, behind the wooden gate you will find the back door into the manual handling training room.
