You must be in a role where you are regularly engaging and communicating directly with children and young people as the assignment requires reflection on, and evidence from, actual practice. Applicants may have previously undertaken child observation exercises in their qualifying training, but this module offers a much more in-depth and critical experience designed to underpin specialist practice.
Please note - there is a requirement to observe a child not known to you on six occasions as part of this module. You need to factor this in to your planning and discuss with your manager before applying.
This module will be taught in-person at the University.
Dates are draft at the moment and will be confirmed nearer the time.

This course provides an opportunity to think about the subject of death and dying.
It focusses on how we can help those we are supporting to talk about this difficult and sensitive subject when they need to.
Conversations about death and dying may not have taken place with family or loved ones for a variety of reasons, and we may find ourselves in the position of needing to respond to a persons' need to discuss their own death but not being sure how to.
These conversations may be planned, or happen in an unprompted way. They may happen once only or over a series of different occasions.
This course introduces a 'Guided conversation tool kit' which can help us to navigate this difficult and sensitive topic with the person we are supporting. It aims to increase awareness of situations in which a person may indicate they need to discuss their own mortality, the factors that can impact on how they approach their own death, and provide greater understanding, skills and confidence in knowing how to respond.

As we establish hybrid working arrangements across the council, HR will be holding Q&A sessions for managers who manage hybrid teams. Hybrid working enables us to place flexibility, wellbeing and inclusion at the heart of how we work. This requires managers to balance individual working preferences with team cohesion whilst prioritising customer needs. How we apply current legislation, guidance and policy is part of this.
The above session will offer an overview of how to apply our hybrid working guidance, alongside legal and policy implications. We will provide managers with the opportunity to ask questions, share experiences and hear advice from HR colleagues, and members of our Future Ways of Working programme.
The sessions are available to anyone who is in a line management role regardless of seniority.
If you can submit your question in advance to FutureWaysofWorking@brighton-hove.gov.uk, this would help us plan the sessions and identify common themes. Confidentiality will be maintained. Alternatively, you can bring your question with you to the session.
There are no limits to the number of places available, and encourage you to attend.

The Secure Base model provides a positive framework for therapeutic caregiving which helps infants, children and young people to move towards greater security and builds resilience. The model focuses on the interactions that occur between caregivers and children on a day to day, minute by minute basis within the caregiving environment. But it also considers how those relationships can enable the child to develop competence in the outside world of school, peer group and community.
This workshop explores the Secure Base Model and its implementation in a childcare environment.
This is FPP team training.
This focussed programme aims to develop manager’s knowledge, skills and confidence to enable them to fully integrate a coaching approach into the daily management of staff and projects in order to operate effectively, promote a culture of empowerment and engagement and to support creativity in a challenging business environment.
A coaching approach is increasingly well evidenced across the business community and public sector as an appropriate and successful leadership style, creating a ‘win-win’ effect, where staff are motivated and engaged, and work can be successfully devolved, freeing up valuable management time and resources.
