These sessions are kindly provided by the Sussex Acquired Brain Injury Forum (SABIF). The SABIF aims to develop a clearer understanding of acquired brain injury (ABI) within the ABI community in Sussex for the benefit of people with brain injury in all its forms.
Five events are planned, led by experienced professionals and stakeholders. This will give you the perspective of neuropsychology, occupational therapy, social work, lived experience, law and more.
The sessions are
· Carers and families of ABI survivors
· Care Act assessments of ABI survivors
· Psycho-social issues following a brain injury
· Mental capacity, ABI and social work
· A round table discussion about how we can develop social work practice for people with an ABI.
The recent ‘James’ Safeguarding Adults Review highlights the importance of training to staff working with people with ABI and this is a great opportunity to develop your understanding of this complex topic. You can attend as many of the sessions as you like – please apply separately to each event you would like to attend.
Francis Lacy Scott, chair of the Sussex Acquired Brain Injury Forum says “Working with people an ABI presents professional challenges; the extent of the impact of the brain injury can be hidden, presenting challenges to assessing the impact on daily living and decision making. The SABIF is pleased to bring together leading experts in this series of events to develop understanding and enhance practice in ABI social work.”

This training is highly recommended for lone workers and other staff that work in a customer facing role who may deal with potential violence and aggression at work.
Lone Working is an area of work that can cause workers considerable stress and anxiety. This is particularly the case when workers have not considered the potential of the situation in a rational way. This area can also be problematic when workers do not receive appropriate support and/or sufficient training and guidance.
This training aims to provide participants with understanding of what would be considered safe working practices in this context. The course is informed by the policies and procedures of the organisation as well as material from the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, HSE, DoH, and NICE. It is set in the context of the Care Act (2014) and supports the Social Care Commitment.
The training does not cover the use of physical techniques.
PROACT-SCIPr-UK is an organisational approach to understanding behaviour and supporting individuals to manage their own behaviour using Positive Behaviour Support.
The programme has been amended due to the Covid-19 outbreak and infection prevention control measures and special instructions for attending this course are detailed below in the additional information. Please ensure these are read and understood before applying and attending the programme. Delegates can also request a full copy of the risk assessments that cover this training course.
This one day training is an annual refresher of both the Introduction and Foundation training. All participants should have already attended the original training. It is for staff at Tudor House and Drove Road, who work with young people with Learning Difficulties.
